Winemaker's Notes:

The 2014 vintage in the Napa Valley is known as the year of the earthquake. The late August earthquake caused a slight disruption in the harvest, but was not a major problem for most wineries. The ongoing drought conditions defined the growing season and led to one of Napa’s earliest harvests on record with limited crop size. Cabernet took center stage, but all grapes - including Chardonnay, Merlot, and Syrah fared well, under ideal weather conditions. Quality is excellent somewhere between 2012 and 2013. 2014 is darker and a bit more concentrated than the 2012’s, but perhaps with some earlier appeal than the tightly packed wines of 2013. Syrah, also known as Shiraz in Australia, is one of the most noble grapes of the Rhone Valley, and by far the most widely planted Rhone variety in California. Syrah is a varietal that thrives in the Napa Valley. The Syrah grape itself is thick-skinned and dark, almost black. Wines made from Syrah are intense with a dark purple-black color.

Tasting Notes:

This wine features beautiful blackberry and black raspberry fruit, smoke, tar and black pepper, with a smooth supple texture. Syrah reflects minerality well, and the chalky character of the tannins provides a wonderful backbone if blended to softer, fruitier varietals. At Hagafen we produce our Syrah from grapes grown in our CCOF certified Coombsville organic vineyard where warm days and cool nights allow the grapes to achieve concentrated flavors and complex phenolics.
