2015 Hagafen Chardonnay
Oak Knoll District of Napa Valley
After three years of plentiful harvests, California's water shortage finally caught up with Napa Valley's vines. A year marked by drought produced a very small crop; there was also some uneven ripening as sugars outpaced flavor development. There was great Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc and Zinfandel harvested in some vineyards, but quality and yields varied considerably from vineyard to vineyard. We were lucky being in the cooler southern part of the Valley we escaped some of the heat in May that caused problems further north. The rest of the growing season was picture perfect with harvest starting very early on July 22, almost a month ahead of normal.
This small production Chardonnay is a showstopper. It starts with an aroma that is so pleasant, so agreeable, so demure yet so engaging; this wine has poise! Aromas of vanilla, golden apple and pineapple fill the senses and are rounded out with a hint of light butterscotch. The flavors carry though to the palate with a soft and luscious fruitiness balanced with a light cre me fresh. The demure spiciness adds just the right amount of zest and leaves your mouth charmed and wanting more.
